Brook Plan

The Nelson City Council is encouraging submissions on the draft Brook Recreation Reserve Management Plan before consultation closes on Monday August 17 at 5pm.

The draft outlines how the reserve area that includes the Brook camp could be used in the future, what needs protection and how the setting could best serve Nelsonians and visitors.  Fourteen submissions had been received by Friday.

There will be a hearing on September 2, a public meeting on September 22 and a final decision on October 15.

Trathen's Fate Known Soon

The Trathen family hopes to make a decision on the future of its stylish but earthquake-prone Trafalgar St building soon.

Owner Ben Trathen said the options were to strengthen or demolish and replace.  If the latter was chosen "we will be replacing one icon with another," he said.

Built in the early 1920's, the Trathen's building has the most ornate old facade in Trafalgar St, with a distinctive curved upstairs window.  It was home to a leading department store for decades, and is in a prime position between Bridge and Hardy Streets.

But since the Nelson City Council determined that it had to be strengthened or demolished by December 2019, two of its street level tenants, a jewellery store and a camera store, have closed.  The third shop in the building is occupied by Robert Harris Cafe.

Trathen said the family had been involved in a series of recent meetings and hoped to make its decision in about a fortnight.

Thought For The Week

Ironically the fear of failure is often what leads to failure in the first place.
