ORCHARD FLATS TO GET FULL UPGRADE

The Government is pumping $ 1.17 million into upgrading Stoke’s council-owned Orchard Flats to keep pensioners warmer next winter. Housing New Zealand has given the council a $ 1.17m interest-free loan to improve the insulation, heating and windows in the 39 flats. About $30,000 will be spent on upgrading each unit. The project will also include reorienting some units to make better use of sunlight, and installing new ramps and landings.

ARTIST WANTS ALL SORTS TO PAINT HIS MURAL

When it’s finished, a new mural at Nelson’s Victory Square will symbolise the community weaving its way into the universe, says the artist behind the bright work. The mural, which is being painted on the side of the community’s On the Spot dairy, will feature eye-catching images of harakeke (flax), planets and licorice allsorts. It has been designed by mural artist Chris Finlayson who says it’s a reflection of the diverse community. The mural will be finished in January.

FARMERS URGED TO CHECK FIRE COVERAGE

Rural property owners are being encouraged to make sure they are fully insured, with initial assessments indicating that the cost of last month’s large forest fire at Tadmor will be in the millions of dollars. The fire destroyed a home, farm buildings and equipment as it raged over 500 hectares of farmland, scrub and forest. A home and farmstay building, a tractor, a digger, a bulldozer and a tree harvesting de-limber were destroyed, while about 150ha of exotic forest was either damaged or destroyed. Insurance Council of New Zealand spokesman Chris Ryan said property owners should contact their insurance company or broker to find out about coverage for the damage caused by fires.

COUNCIL ADOPTS NEW NAMING RIGHTS POLICY

Nelson city councillors have debated at length the intricate details around a new naming rights policy, which allows community assets owned by the council to bear the names of commercial sponsors. The council agreed yesterday to adopt the naming rights and sponsorship policy, which will help the council raise money from selling advertising space on its community buildings.

CENTRE OPEN TO VISITORS

The Moutere’s newest early childhood learning and community centre, Harakeke, is open to inspection by the public on Thursdays to Sundays, 10am to 2pm, from December 31 until it officially opens on January 25. The building is on the former Tipi Stay land, the site of a 19th century flax mill, on the Moutere Highway near Gardner Valley Rd. During the open days there will be a harakeke exhibition by artists Sally Austin and Carol Greenall and sculptures and wall panels carved by Johannes Ruebsam on display. The centre is owned by German-trained early childhood teacher Gundula Montag-Ruebsam, who has more than 25 years’ experience in the sector both overseas and in the Nelson region.

FAMRERS MARKET SHIFTS INTO TOWN

Competition is hotting up in Nelson’s market industry. The Nelson Farmers Market has moved from Founders Heritage Park to Fashion Island in central Nelson and had its first day in business yesterday. The gap left at Founders will be filled by the newly formed Friday Night Founders Market – a move led by owner of Homestyle Foods in Richmond, and Richmond Market operator Karl Hadfield. Mr Hadfield said 15 to 20 stalls were confirmed for this Friday, made up of mainly newcomers, plus a few from the Richmond Market and Farmers Market. Friday Night Founders Market will be held every Friday from 3pm to 7pm, except Christmas day.

SUSPENDED DRAFT REPORT SET FOR RELEASE

A draft version of a report on the extent to which the remediation of Mapua’s former Fruitgrowers Chemical Company site affected public health is nearing completion. The report, written by the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board’s public health service, will be received by the Ministry of Health this week. However, the ministry has no idea when the public will get to see the highly anticipated document, which has been significantly delayed.

New Fashion Island stores

Nelson’s Fashion Island shopping complex is set to become home to two new stores. Retail manager Nicola Dolan said Australian-based handmade cosmetic chain Lush would be opening next to the Living and Giving store in February. Another Australian-based retailer, Smiggle, will be opening on the opposite side of the complex, near Colorado, in April. Smiggle was part of the Just Group and had stationery aimed at the ‘‘tween’’ market, Mrs Dolan said. ‘‘They’re great tenancies to have, and they really add something to our tenancy mix.’’ Nelson’s weekly Farmers Market also began operating from Fashion Island this week.

Healthy interest in properties

Five neighbouring Motueka properties being sold by Wakatu Incorporation attracted 14 tenders, First National agent Bob Brereton says. Four of the properties are in Poole St and have weatherboard homes on sections ranging from 1371sq m to 1510sq m, with rateable values between $270,000 and $300,000. The fifth property, at 25 Whakarewa St, has an RV of $255,000. The former leasehold properties are being sold freehold. Mr Brereton said 29 Poole St was the first to be signed up and negotiations were continuing on the remaining ones. Getting that many tenders was a good outcome, he said.

Work on new sections starts

Work is under way on the development of 18 more sections in the second and final stage of the Valley Heights subdivision above Nelson’s Washington Valley. Farr Developments director Graeme Marshall said only seven of the 28 sections in stage one remained for sale, with prices starting at $130,000. ‘‘I don’t think the market is that bad.’’ Sections in the second stage would have ‘‘formed, flat building sites’’ and views over Nelson, he said. ‘‘We would have done it earlier – we’ve been waiting for the weather to come right.’’ Mr Marshall said he expected the sections to be completed by May and to go on the market for about $180,000 each.

Big plans for big burgers

The man behind a new burger cafe in the former Black Market Imports store in Bridge St, Nelson hopes to expand the concept to Wellington next year. Bloody Big Burgers owner Raymond Ng said he had been living in Motueka and planning his business for a year. It would operate seven days a week, selling more than 30 different burgers, as well as coffee and beer once it obtained a liquor licence, he said. Mr Ng said he believed Nelson was a good place to start his business because the city had nothing else like it. It will employ up to eight staff, and Mr Ng hopes to have it operating by December 27.

Mortgagee sales continue

Harcourts has auctioned three mortgagee properties this month, concluding sales on two of them. A three-bedroom home at 30 Rainbow Drive, Atawhai attracted six bidders and sold under the hammer on December 9 for $307,000. Its RV is $290,000. Meanwhile, a new four-bedroom home at 12 Curtis St, Stoke with an RV of $360,000 was passed in at auction this week for $350,000. Sales manager Mike Rollo said three bidders competed for the property and it sold the following day. A four-bedroom unit and a two-bedroom unit at 405a Main Rd Stoke was passed in for $425,500. Mr Rollo said negotiations were continuing with two interested parties.

Beachfront property sold

A 6.4-hectare Ruby Bay property with a ‘‘lovingly restored’’ relocated home and 300 metres of beach frontage has sold through Bayleys agent Daniel Reed after being on the market for two years. The property has an RV of $1.565 million. Mr Reed declined to comment on the sale price but said there was steady interest throughout the sale process. ‘‘I expect interest in waterfront properties to increase as we get past the Christmas period.’’ Interest often picked up after Boxing Day with the arrival of holidaymakers, he said.
