RISING HOUSE VALUES BEHIND PAST PEAKS

House values in Nelson and Tasman are on the rise, but are still lagging behind the peaks of late 2007 and early 2008, according to the latest figures from QV Valuations.  The latest QV residential price movement monthly report shows prices in Nelson city improved from a 1.1 per cent annual change in November last year, to 3.1 per cent a month later.  The average sale price in December was $346,000.  Tasman district edged slightly above Nelson City for the same period, moving up from a 1.1 per cent annual change last November to 3.3 per cent in December.  The average sale price in the district was $371,499.

NEW FOUNDATION SOLID BASE FOR LEARNING

Knowledge ran deep this  morning at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology as staff placed river rocks from around the top of the south into the foundations of the polytechnic's new arts and media building.  The Government has pledged $8.13 million towards the three-storey timber-framed building, which is the first of its kind in the world.  The building will stand next to the new tourism and hospitality building on Nile St and is expected to cost about $9m.  Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology director of Maori education, P J Devonshire, said the ceremony was about placing some of the life force, or mauri, that radiates from the river rocks into the building.  The rocks came from Kaikoura, Marlborough, Motueka, Golden Bay, the Waimea River and the Maitai River, she said.  "We wanted to bring all that energy here."

POOL CONSTRUCTION UNDER WAY

The ASB Aquatic Centre in Richmond is set to expand, with construction of a $1.5m learn-to-swim pool beginning this week.  The centre's learn-to-swim mascot, Kori, helped turn the first sod yesterday, marking the beginning of a six-month construction period.  Once completed, the 20m by 12m pool will accommodate the centre's increasing number of aspiring swimmers.  The centre already has a 25m lane pool, wave pool, children's pool and  a smaller hydrotherapy pool.

Open-plan policing

The Tasman Police District headquarters is  moving up in the world, with the department set to move from the bottom to the soon-to-be-finished fourth floor of the Monro Building in central Nelson.  The police headquarters currently occupies about three-quarters of the bottom floor and includes the district senior management team, prosecutions department, training group, firearms licensing and search and rescue headquarters.  "It's a rabbits' warren of offices," Tasman police district commander Superintendent Gary Knowles said.  Those departments would move to the new open plan floor, and there would also be provision for search and rescue and operational work to be carried out, and some space for Nelson police to operate.  The new floor was still being built and Mr Knowles could not say when the shift would occur.

Move sounds good

An increasing roll has forced the Soundstage Professional Music and Performing Arts Education centre to move into a new site on Rutherford St.  It was previously located at Radio Nelson House on the corner of Selwyn Place and Church St, where it had four studios and office space.  Director Jane Winter said the new premises gave them three times as much space and enabled them to offer new and expanded courses to pupils.  "We want to be able to do it a little better."  Soundstage is having an enrolment day on January 29.

Village in demand

The Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village in Stoke has recently celebrated completing 100 houses in 100 weeks, and demand has been so strong it is embarking on even more construction.  Debbie Versey, national sales manager for Ryman Healthcare which owns the village, said it now had over 250 residents in a mixture of independent town houses, assisted living and in the care centre.  The town houses were sold before they were built and they are still fielding enquiries.  "Demand has been such that we've got a major extension underway which will house another 80 residents," she said.  "We're really delighted with the response we've had there."  The new units would offer a mixture of accommodation options.
