Published on: 29th March 2010 SMALL HUT, BIG LEARNING EXPERIENCE SMALL HUT, BIG LEARNING EXPERIENCEAfter more than 12 months of hard graft, 10 girls from Salisbury School can hold their heads high after building their very own environmentally friendly back-country hut. The EcoHut challenge sets schools the goal of creating a small hut built for less than $100. The Salisbury School team worked on the hut for more than a year, planning, developing and building it. The one-bunk hut is made from donated and recycled macrocarpa and has a water tank that catches rain. (The Nelson Mail, 23 March 2010) MOVING WITH THE TIMESStoke's new PostShop and Kiwibank was officially opened this morning. The Putaitai St store, which opened to the public last Monday, was blessed by Nelson City Council kaumatua Archdeacon Andy Joseph, and Nelson Mayor Kerry Marshall cut the ribbon to the store. (The Nelson Mail, Wednesday 24 March 2010) CONSERVATION CENTRE OPENSThe opening of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Conservation Centre will see the Nelson region become known as the hub of conservation education in New Zealand, according to the sanctuary’s trust. The centre was opened yesterday, by Nelson MP and Environment Minister Nick Smith. It will also allow the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology to offer new programmes in association with the Department of Conservation and will become the new base of New Zealand’s only DOC trainee ranger course. (The Nelson Mail, Friday 26 March 2010) CONFERENCE CENTRE VENUE HUNT RESUMESThe search is on for a new site for a planned new performing arts and conference centre in Nelson. City councillors agreed unanimously at a full council meeting yesterday to go ahead with a new plan to examine building the venue for the Nelson region. They agreed to a multi-part recommendation which included starting another public consultation over potential sites within the next few months. The council has voiced a preference for an ‘‘integrated’’ development, meaning it would have a conference centre and a performing arts venue, despite a recent announcement that Rutherford Hotel Holdings planned to go ahead and build its own conference centre extending off the central Nelson hotel. (The Nelson Mail, Friday 26 March 2010) SCHOOL'S NEW SPACE HAS SUNNY FEELIt does not have a name yet but there are big plans for the new classroom and outdoor space at Nelson’s Enner Glynn School. The new roofed area was opened yesterday by Nelson MP Nick Smith, who was welcomed along with other dignitaries by a haka powhiri from the school’s kapa haka group. Principal Isaac Day said the space would allow for a flow between classrooms in an area that was previously unused. (The Nelson Mail, Saturday 27 March 2010) PROPERTY WATCHSwapping locations Sprog Hogs Kids Furniture is moving from the Main Rd Stoke location it has occupied for six years to the former Big J’s eatery site in Wakatu Square, Nelson. Owner Sharm Schweder said the move provided her business with a ‘‘better location’’ alongside the bus terminal. Her store at 561 Main Rd Stoke closed this week, and she expects to have the new store open on April 6. Meanwhile, Big Js has shifted in the opposite direction, taking over the former Reels Burger Bar in Stoke. More out-of-town buyers Bayleys Nelson agent Daniel Reed says he has noticed an upturn in the number of out-of-town buyers purchasing properties in the region. He said nine of the last 10 properties he sold were to out-of-town buyers, including his two most recent sales – a home, commercial building and shop in Tasman, and a 2500-square metre residential property with sea views at 44 Korepo Rd, Ruby Bay. It had an RV of $690,000 and sold in less than a month, Mr Reed said. The Tasman property, at 1823 Coastal Highway, was marketed at offers over $570,000. Mr Reed declined to comment on the sale prices. He said all the out-of-town buyers had been attracted to the region for different reasons. Response to demand Christchurch-based wardrobe supplier is opening a new branch in Tahunanui. Simply Wardrobes has leased premises at 40 Tahunanui Drive, near McDonald’s, through Summit commercial agent Bevan Dixon. Managing director Patrick Quinlivan said the move had been prompted by strong demand for its products from Nelson customers. The business prides itself on selling ‘‘designer wardrobes without the designer price tag’’, and has branches in Timaru and Ashburton. The Tahunanui branch would open in the first week of April and operate under the management of a local dealer and distributor, Mr Quinlivan said.
