HOME EMPTY WHILE 200 WAIT

A four-bedroom home which the Housing New Zealand owns in Stoke has sat empty since last October while the number of Nelson people on its waiting list has ballooned to more than 200. HNZ’s housing partnerships and programme director Claire Falck said the Stoke property was one of 55 community group housing properties in Nelson. These properties are rented to community groups that provide residential services. These can be for people with mental health issues, intellectually disabled, women seeking refuge, youth at risk and people in need of emergency housing. ‘‘In the case of the house in Porritt Place, Nelson, it took time to not only identify a new tenant but to determine the upgrade work required and lastly to have the work completed.’’ As at April 30, there were four vacant community housing properties in the Nelson region. Three were being re-let and one was for sale due to its unsuitability, Ms Falck said. In addition to the community group housing, HNZ says it has 743 properties in Nelson and Tasman and three of these have been vacant for more than three months due to fire damage. Regional manager David Griffiths said a feasibility study was commissioned to examine the possibility of redevelopment due to the extensive repairs required.

NEW DEPOT STREAMLINES DISTRIBUTION

A new depot that handles $10 million worth of dairy and meat products a year was officially opened in Nelson yesterday. The $1.2m state-of-the-art facility, which also distributes 5.1 million litres of milk a year, was built for Goodman Fielder on a leased site in an industrial estate in Venice Place near Nelson Airport.

CHILEAN PLANS BIKE TRAILS

An overseas investor has purchased land in the Wairoa Gorge near Wakefield to build 75 kilometres of private mountain-bike tracks. Mountain Bike New Zealand (MTBNZ) executive committee member Chris Mildon said yesterday he understood a Chilean man had bought two adjoining titles in the gorge and that track-building company Rotorua-based New Zealand Trail Solutions would build the new single-track trails. There was the possibility of ‘‘a lodge-style setup’’ being built to provide accommodation for paying riders.

BUILDING GOES BUSH IN THE CITY

Nature has reclaimed a part of Nelson city with the completion of the latest large-scale mural by Nelson artist Chris Finlayson. Mr Finlayson finished the mural entitled Urban Jungle this week after starting the massive job in March. The mural was commissioned by Nelson businessman Tom Sturgess. The native bush scene has taken over the entire wall of a building near the 1903 site. Four birds have been painted into the dense green foliage of the mural and Mr Finlayson is challenging passers-by to see if they can find them.

NEW BIKE TRAIL TAKES SHAPE IN MARSDEN VALLEY

It's full steam ahead for the Nelson Mountain Bike Club, which is working hard on a number of new trails designed to cater for the increasing popularity of the sport. The latest project to kick off has been the development of a 6.5-kilometre trail up the Marsden Valley, known as the Barnicoat Mountain Bike Trail. Rising to an elevation of 460 metres, it will link with a shingle road used by paragliders and is designed to be suitable for intermediate level riders, club president Chris Mildon said. It took more than two years to get the necessary consents, and Mildon hoped it would be completed in time for Christmas.

Peanut idea paying off

A peanut butter factory is about to start taking shape in the building behind Pomeroys Cafe in the Wakatu Industrial Estate. Pic Picot, creator of Pic’s Really Good Peanut Butter, said the 500-square-metre premises provided enough space to increase production fivefold, allowing him to target export markets and New Zealand supermarket chains. He also plans to include an area where the public can view peanut butter being made. The business currently operates from premises in the nearby former freezing works. Mr Picot said he hoped to open in the new factory in September.

Cafe at McCashin's

Nelson’s Zumo Coffee is opening an outlet at McCashin’s Brewery in Stoke. Emma McCashin of McCashin’s Brewery said the cafe would begin operating this Queen’s Birthday Monday and would trade six days a week from 7am to 3pm. ‘‘Like the city Zumo, people are welcome to BYO lunch and enjoy their coffee.’’ She said Zumo owner Dan Slattery originally approached the brewery with plans to trial a coffee cart at the site but instead decided it was perfect for a cafe. ‘‘We’re very excited about the prospect of having real coffee on site.’’ The brewery was establishing itself as a place where people from out of town could taste and buy good Nelson products, such as its own range of beverages and Pic’s Really Good Peanut Butter, she said.

Hospice shop on the move

The Nelson Hospice Shop is moving a few doors down the road in Bridge St, to bigger premises that used to be occupied by clothing retailer Uber Funk. Hospice Shops general manager Des Slow said the store at 108-110 Bridge St was about 50 per cent larger than its premises at 124 Bridge St. The second-hand clothing store is one of four the hospice operates in the region as part of its fundraising activities. Mr Slow said it was keen to find more volunteers to work in the new store. It will open for trading on June 21 before holding a formal opening with invited guests on June 26.

Be careful of the words you say

And keep them soft and sweet

For you never know from day to day

Which ones you'll have to eat
