Helicopter house hardest build yet as supplies drop

It could break fundraising records, but a shortage of supplies and labour mean Nelson’s latest helicopter house is shaping up to be the toughest build yet.

For the third time, Mitre 10 Mega Nelson is partnering with local organisations to raise funds for the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust (NMRHT) by building a house to be auctioned off for charity.

On Saturday morning, Reverend Tremain Mikaere touched down in the rescue helicopter to bless the build, as well as the chopper, as it gears up for a busy summer season.

In 2017 the build raised $142,000 for NMRHT’s Rescue Helicopter’s endowment trust. Two years later, a repeat performance netted $210,000 for the service.

Mitre 10 Mega marketing manager Murray Leaning hoped to hit as much as $300,000 this time round.

However, Covid-related factors meant this build would be challenging, he said.

Nelson Junction plans progress

The development of the Nelson Junction site is kicking into gear with plans progressing for a large-format retail centre.

Nelson company Gibbons, which owns the Annesbrook site, is beginning early site clearing and infrastructure work, said the firm’s managing director Scott Gibbons.

Real estate agency Colliers International is marketing the Quarantine Rd development on the vacant land by Mitre 10 Mega, seeking tenants for stage one of the project. In the first stage, opposite Mitre 10 Mega, there will be 10,948 square metres of retail with up to 11 tenants.

Colliers was seeking tenants such as furniture, appliance, homeware, plumbing, lighting, home furnishing and lifestyle retailers. Building or site sizes will range from 500 sq m to 2500 sq m.

Report looks at shortage of housing

The demand for housing in Nelson-Tasman is still outstripping the supply of new homes, leaving the region one of the least affordable in the country.

A report into the state of the region’s housing has outlined some of the reasons for the current shortage, which was discussed at a Nelson City Council meeting yesterday.

The Nelson Tasman Joint Monitoring Report provides statistics on a range of housing indicators, including supply and demand for dwellings, housing affordability, house prices and rents and housing development capacity.

The report tracked data from July 2020 to June 2021 within the Nelson-Tasman Urban Environment – comprising Nelson, Richmond, Hope, Motueka, Mapua, Wakefield, Brightwater, Cable Bay and Hira.

Tasman housing hits ‘record high’

Tasman’s housing market climbed to new heights in October, with the district’s average time taken to sell property the fastest in the country.

Data released by the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) has revealed that Tasman’s property market had a 28.6 per cent increase in its median house price over the past year, with prices rising from $700,000 to $900,000; a ‘‘record high’’.

The average number of days to sell a property in the Tasman district was 25 – the fastest in New Zealand.

The top sale in the Tasman district was of a property worth $1,500,000, and the region has reached a new high on the REINZ House Price Index.

REINZ chief executive Jen Baird said Tasman’s increasing house prices continued to be part of a really strong property market across the country that was seeing an ‘‘upwards trend’’.

Major forestry study of sediment

A $3.6 million study is under way in the Tasman district to find the best way to reduce sediment running into rivers from forest harvesting.

The seven-year project, at forestry company OneFortyOne’s Donald Creek Forest near Tadmor, is in its second year. OneFortyOne New Zealand (formerly Nelson Forests) and the Ministry for Primary Industries are jointly funding the study, with MPI providing $1.37 million of funding through its Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures fund.
