First Home Buyers Flood HNZ With Grant Applications

Extra staff have been pumped into Housing New Zealand to deal with the flood of first home buyers applying for Government support.

After the KiwiSaver HomeStart package took effect on April 1, Housing New Zealand (HNZ) was so swamped with applications that the policy of processing an application in 10 days stretched out to 20 days in May.

Under the new scheme, grants of up to $10,000 for the purchase of an existing home and grants of up to $20,000 for the purchase of a newly-built home are available.

New Place To Stay Full Of History

An historic Nelson pub that fell on hard times is buzzing with life again.

Nelson builder Jonny Lewis bought the former Bush Inn Tavern in Grove St last year and has turned it into a short- and long term accommodation complex. After months of renovating the interior, Bush Inn accommodation is open for business and Lewis is thrilled to see strong demand.

The inn opened in 1858 but after a number of owners in recent years it closed in October 2013 after the company managing it went into liquidation.

After its refurbishment it is now fitted out with 12 king-single rooms on the ground floor and five super king rooms with ensuites on the first floor. It is currently fully tenanted.
